The Turner's Michigan Marvels

Friends of mine, Wade, Rose Mary and Luke Turner went to Michigna about the smae time I did and enjoyed their time there. Don't blame them. They got to enjoy Lake Michigan and got even more time to enjoy Lake Superior. They told about how scary the Mackinaw bridge waas. Been there. It is. Some of the lanes are grated and you can see all the way down to the water. If this was not enought, there is the wind to contend with. Needless to say, they are state police available to drive you acros if it is too muc for you to handle. Wade handled it well enough to do it himself. He also got to enjoy the local dish of pasties. It's always neat to try the local food especially if you know the right place to buy.

I envy the time they had on Lake Superior but then agan no matter how much time I get around the big lakes and no matter how much I drink in its beuty. It is never enough. Thanks for the pictures Wade. I wil look at these and dream until I am on the shores once again to enjoy them for real.

Dekalb Free Fair

It is definitely fall. THe Auburn Fall Fair was this week. A tractor pull, agriculture nad Four H displays and all the fair rides and fair food you can take. Even though I am miles and years from my childhood, it is the same type of country fair i grew up with. One booth called chapel chili has the best small town church lady pie in the world. I love going to the merchant tent. Worker's world in butler has a booth with the best deals on work clothes. For more details see Link.

The Point

When I was young, Harry Nilsson did a sotry album that was also made for tv. I really liked it. It was a kid born without a point on his head in a land where everyone did. He was banished to the pointless forest where everything had a piont so he returns figuring he also has a point. The following are clips from the cartoon.

It's not all of it and it is chopped up and out of order but it should give you a weird taste of what I liked as a kid.

Geocoins

Geocoins are a neat part of caching. Some are about benchmarks or personal coins or group coins or even state parks. The variety and creativity of these are endless. As with anything else collectable, there are more and less coveted coins. I just like the geo bling. Just one more dimension to the geocaching game. Sometimes I feel like Smaug the dragon with his geocoin treasure but really, at the end of the day, it is just all about fun. I enjoy the social factor of sharing a common interest of geocoins with the cachers I meet. Some are hardcore, some like to log, some just to look and some are just not into the coins. There is room enough for all.

I can tell that geocoins are moving on. a similar product called pathtags are becoming the new hotness. They are cool too. I have not gotten into those as much yet but given enough time I might. I can't see that soon. I have a nice pile of bling. Time will tell.

Shooting Stars

This is too funny.

Blogs

There's a category on waymarking for blogs. Neat way to see other blogs. Since we are waymarkers, most of the caches have waymarking or caching as either its focus or at least some of the posts deal with them. I enjoy reading others impressions and adventures doing the same hobby.

What got me annoyed was that one blog was anitwar and its coordinates placed it in Iraq. I realize there is disagreement about the war and I dont want someone censoring my blog but this one was too focused on a single message. They can express their viewpoint but I just did not care for the way they did it. Any geocaching soldier who is serving in Iraq can see this easy by chec king out waymarking because it is the only waymaark in town. It's message is not good for troop moral.

I am not against free speech but there is better and worse ways toengage in deba te. The cool thing is things like blogs give us a cyber forum to express our views. The down size is that everyone can and how do you wade through the noise to get to the good stuff. That is true for every media. Take time to think and do not believe everything you hear ot read. That includes this blog. I will not purposely put up false info but lets face it, being human, I am fallable and can be subject to buying bad info like everyone else. Use your brain and do the effort of fact checking.

Time to get off my soapbox.

I can't drive 55

Budweiser

I am not a fan of Budweiser but this ad I like.

3rd Annual Pokagon Cacher's Campout

Kim and I went to another cache event , this weekend. The weather was perfect and it went well. I think it is funny that it is the third event cache we got a new geocoin at. That's not really fair. Geobash was a special case where we traded for a bunch. We did win geocoins at the next two. Funniest thing is that we got a bitten by the geocoin bug coin today. Someone was offering them to those who asked on gc.com with no promises. Fortunately, our name was put on the list.

Getting back to the event. the was a guy from Leave No Trace and he had a great lecture on leaving no or minimum empact on nature. I appreciated it. I don't agree with all the enviromentalists but this guy was good. He was trying to show how to limit your impact while enjoying nature. i don't agree with those people who think we should never ever go out and touch nature ever again. I beieive in the stewardship and caretaker position instead of the hands of position. I truly beieive there is a way of harvseting the animals of the field just like the crops we raise that is good for the enviroment. I know bambi is cute and some people do not want to eat deer for whatever reason, that is their choice. If they are against hunting and still eat meat, then what is more moral, eating an animal raised to eat or one that has a chance to get away.

Sorry, I am getting away from the main topic.

It wasw a fun day. Hung out with torry. Saw a lot of faces both familar and new. It was the perfect weather for being outside. There was also a lot of seaplanes coming into the park that was really neat to see. Ended the day around a camp fire and enjoying some home made beer.

Good time all round.

What the Heck? II

I think I need to revise my thoughts of yesterday's blog. Between hearing more reports and seeing additional footage, the way situation looks a lot different. It amazes me how just hearing it or a good edit can reverse how something looks. I knew that happens but this one hooked me good. Lesson learned. Don't be so quick to comment and check it out.

The reason I jumped on it so fast is that you absolutely have the right of free speech but i did not temper that with you don't have the right of absolutely free sppech. You can't yell fire in a theatre, you can't wake up the neighbourhood in the middle of the night with your political beleifs and you can't libel someone. There is a responsibility with every right. The struggle is how do you speperate speech you disagree with and people that are actually behaving badly. Far too many people bahave badly under the flag of first amendment. Others fail to act under the the same flag or just don't want the confrontation.

It is not easy . Vigilance us the price of freedom and if anything good comes out of tazorboys antics, maybe this will get people talking about free speech, police intervention and how the media protrays things.

What the heck?

This footage happened when Senator Kerry was having a question and answer period. I realize this footage does not shot the context or rules of this but I think the cops over reacted. If we can't asked questions of politicians for fear of gettng arrested, then what is this country coming to?

Second video.

Geocaching Video

Neat tv spot put on the internet.

Oj is back!

Can you beleive this Oj was dumb enough to do his latest brush with the law? From the news reports I have heard, even if he was going after his own stuff, the way he went to get it was still a felonious break aand enter at gun point. Since he was arrested and put in jail so fast and that there were witnesses, it looks like there should be problem making it stick. I realize he was found not guilty on the earlier murder charges but his history will not help. I wonder how much of a media circus this will be. Considering how much of one it was for the murder case, you will have to live on the moon or be a hermit on a desrted island not to hear of this. I should not complain about the coverage in the media too much, the story is making the blog.

How we obseessively watch and talk about celebreties is warped and sick but me complaining about it part of the problem. That is also a topic for another blog post.

Dog Funny

DOG'S NOTES TO SELF:

~ The garbage collector is not stealing our stuff.

~ I do not need to suddenly stand straight up when I'm lying under the coffee table.

~ I will not roll my toys behind the fridge, behind the sofa or under the bed.

~ I must shake the rainwater out of my fur before entering the house.

~ I will not eat the cats' food--before they eat it or after they throw it up.

~ I will stop trying to find the few remaining pieces of clean carpet in the house when I am about to get sick.

~ I will not throw up in the car.

~ I will not roll on dead seagulls, fish, crabs, etc. just because I like the way they smell.

~ "Kitty box crunchies"--although they are tasty--are not food.

~ I will not eat any more Kleenex or napkins and then redeposit them in the backyard after processing.

~ The diaper pail is not a cookie jar.

~ I will not chew my human's toothbrush and not tell them.

~ I will not chew crayons or pens, especially not the red ones, or my people will think I am hemorrhaging.

~ When in the car, I will not insist on having the window rolled down when it's raining outside.

~ We do not have a doorbell. I will not bark each time I hear one on TV.

~ I will not steal my mom's underwear and dance all over the backyard with it.

~ The sofa is not a face towel. Neither are mom & dad's laps.

~ My head does not belong in the refrigerator.

~ I will not bite the officer's hand when he reaches in for mom's driver's license and car registration.

~ I will not play tug-of-war with dad's underwear when he's on the toilet.

~ I will not use "roll around in the dirt" as an option just after getting a bath.

~ Sticking my nose into someone's crotch is not an acceptable way of saying hello.

~ I will not come in from outside and immediately drag my butt across the carpet.

~ The toilet bowl is not a never-ending water supply and just because the water is blue, it doesn't mean it is cleaner.

~ The cat is not a squeaky toy so when I play with him and he makes that noise, it's usually not a good thing.

9/11/2001 Lest We Forget

It wil be six years ago tomorrow that war was declared on the United State. Friends and people I know have gone to fight this war. Six years later we are arguing over how we should have responded. I know we should respond but I often don't see it as a clear direction. All I know is that I want to do is pound those responsible into a worse oblivion than they caused. Don't watch this video if you can't afford the sadness and anger those living in the States felt in those painful days times those six years ago.

For James

A friend of mine wanted a copy of the following song. Didn't know where mine is so I am posting this.

Mosquitos

I cut the lawn today and almost got carried off by mosquitos. They are bad right now. It was so dry for so much of summer followed by so mcuh wet that I think we are getting the years batch of them all at once. Great! At least it is not as bad as dealing with prescription companies.

In God We Trust

The State of Indian has had the wisdom to make a In God We Trust license plate. I was so glad they did that there is one of these plates on both our cars. I don't care if the atheist and UCLA don't like it either. No disrespect inteneded but the vast majority of people in the state and the country believe in God. We may not agree on who god is but I think we can agree in the God of our faiths. All Christians, Jews, Muslims and most other religions trust God as they see God. That we can agree on even though we disagree loudly about the details. To the atheist I say, get a different license plate. I will defend your right to speak your positionas loudly as I will speak my own position. I trust in God. I beleive his hand is in history even though I don't always see it or understand the way things unfold.

For someone who does a good job at a related topic, check out Red Skeleton's Plefge of Allegiance.

Matt Kelty

The following videos are a follow up to a post that I previous have done.

There is far more on utube. Just type Matt Kelty in google video.

DR D James Kennedy.

Dr. D. James Kennedy also died today. I do not know if this means anything except we need one more for things come in three to hold true.

Pavarotti

Pavarotti died last night. No better way to note his passage than to listen to what he was best at.

Put the Lotion In the Basket

I don't remember if I have put this video in my blog before. I don't think so,This one is a little more adult and not necessary safe for work of for kids. Here it is.

Arcadia's North Bluff

N 44° 31.213 W 086° 14.609

Visited Arcadia's North Bluff over the Labor Day Weekend. We have been there several times but the first time we did a sunset visit. Grreat place to catch a sunset. Nice to be around one of the great lakes again. I didn't realiz how much I miss the big lakes until I got back to them. I grew up on Lake Erie and took it for granted. Most days, i don't think about it but when I get around the great lakes, I want to drink them in fully. No real suprise.

A&W Rootbeer on tap

Went to the A&W restaurant in Beulah and had their rootbeer on tap. First time in a long time that I had that great stuff. I adored the stuff as a kid and still do. Took me back to a surprise birthday party for me as a kid. Glorious stuff. Rootbeer has to be liquid happiness. Just saying. Unless it is a rootbeer float. And it has to be a&w on tap. Not even the cans will do.
