The Frugality of Exploring Your Own Backyard

I have been walking around the neighbourhood a lot more over the last year. For one thing, I need to get up and off my butt to exercise more. Second of all, under the influence of me waymarking, I have been noticing different things around the neighbourhood more. There is a grotto down the street from me that has two trees that are in memory of tow ladies that have passed away. That got my attention and got me curious about who these ladies were and why they got these trees dedicated to them. There is a story to this and I am yet not aware of it.

In any case, I have been starting to explore nearby places and finding a lot of interesting places that are cheap or free to visit. Whehter it is the grotto with these deicated trees or Lash Park that I spoke of in a previous blog post, There are neat places to go and spend time on the cheap. Some are for the price of walking over for the price of gas for a short drive of a car. (so short I would not even call it a trip) One of the suckiest things of trying to be on a budget is cutting back on doing fun stuff since there is not the budget to do or buy the fun stuff. There are alternatives out there to make your fun time dollars stretch a bit further. This is not someting new thought up by me but something I have been learning to put into practice.

Sometimes it amazes me how it takes hard times to make us all do things we should have been doing all along. I am not saying we can not spend money on fun things, just that we need to look at what we are spending our money on is fun worth the money we are spending. It is all about getting the best bang for our buck because regardless of how well we are doing, our money is finite and we need to put it to good use.

Sacred Heart Hospital/Apartments

I waymarked the Sacred Heart Building a while ago as a dated building. (LINK) The original date stone on the building was for 1902. With the nicer spring weather, I have been walking past this building a bit more often just to get my exercise. I have noticed two more dte stones on this building. One was for when the new addition when in in 1917 and one when the building became the Garrett Community Hospital. I t amazes me that this building has three date stones wehn most buildings do not have any and that it took me this long to notice. Not that I want to start obsessioning about noticing every little detail but I sure does make me want to take better looks at things and notice things more as I go through this life.

Don Lash Park

I was out running errands andgps games. I did a cache called run for the gold. (LINK) It was in a really nice park called Don Lash Park. It is named for a local who became an Olympic Medalist. (LINK) I took the time while walking and finding the cache to get a couple of photos for waymarks. (LINK) Between the nice spring day, the nice location and finding out more about some local history, it was a good time.

myfico.com

With the insanity going on with borrowing money, it is getting important to get educated about money. One area you need to get to know more about is your fico score. You can learn about it at this LINK. Hopefully, I can get out of debt and get financially healthy enough to not have to worry about what my fico score is. Until then, it is a matter of getting educated about money so I can handle it better so life can be sweet.

Pathtags

I have been into geocaching for a while. I also have gotten into the geocoins. One side trade-able in the same vein are pathtags. I have not gotten into those as much but they still have some appeal. They are cool but I just have not gotten into them as much as i have the coins. I got into the geocoins first and had to draw the line somewhere. As with any hobby, you can drop a whole lot of money and still not be done with it. They are a neat dimension to the geocaching hobby. Check out their link HERE.

The Frugality of Patience

Yup, this is another of my ideas on frugality. No major new ideas here, just things that I have noticed that work. One thing to helps with frugalness around y place is being patient. Patience in the sense of waiting to be able to pay cash for things os I do not get zapped into paying more interest. It is also more than that. It is being patient enough to look for not only better deals but the best deals. It is amazing what you can get off ebay or auctions and at what price if you are willing to wait for your price. I am not good at being patient but it helps when the savings and deals start rolling in. In honor of this concept, I am starting a Consumers Advocating Hugh Savings Fund or CASH fund for short. Yes it is a pain in the butt to have to wait but so is trying to get out of debt or making payments all the time. I want more than that and I am willing to sacrifice today to have more tomorrow and the day after.

Historical markers database

I was looking around th 3ewaymarking.com website and found a website that has a database of historic markers. Since I like that sort of thing, I thought I would put it up as this week's webness. The link is HERE. Maybe I can generate a few waymarks from this.

Spring

Getting some weather into the 40s today. Made getting out for a walk a lot nicer. It is nice not needing the extra layers of clothes and gloves just to get out for walk. The days are getting noticeably longer. Not only are the days getting longer but it is getting obvious that it the days are getting longer at a faster rate. Guess that means daylight shifting time can not be too far behind. I grew up with daylight shifting time but I got really use to it when I first moved to Indiana. as much as I like getting more light in the evening, I hate losing it in the morning just as we started to get it back. I also hate getting use to getting up an hour earlier. I hate change.
