I'm flattered

Got an email vis waymarking asking if we minded our waymark pictures could be used on a Canadian Military Memorial site. Way too cool. The site it will be put on is here.

Which grid are you on?

I like doing things with gps whether it is geocaching or benchmarking hunting or just navigating my way to somewhere new. Thanks to a puzzle cache and looking at the write ups for IDNR benchmarks, I am getting interested in coordinate systems other than just latitude and longitude.
(WGS84 Datum). There are so many systems and datums. It is really a moment of realizing how little I know about the technicals of the system. More to learn. I will probably come back to this topic as I learn more.

Monster truck rally

I went to the monster truck Rally at the RCA Doom and learned a few things.

1) take earplugs

2) it is the details that kills the color guard. If you are doing the color guard at a major event, the blue field of the American flag goes on the top left side. The stem of the maple leaf on the Canadian flag goes down. No ifs, ands or butts. If you can't get this straight, then you are too dumb to be out doing the color guard and you should just stay home before someone like me shoots you in the butt for being dumb.

3) The freestyle part is the best.

4) The ATV is the worst

5) it is handy to take the gps with so you find your way back to the parking lot.

6) The stairs at the RCA dome are too darn high.

Welcome to the Deep Freeze

Statistically, the third week of January is the coldest week of the year. The fourth week is a close second. This past weekend wanted to remind us of that around NE Indiana this weekend with geting down to around 0 F.I can tolerate the colder weather pretty good but that is still on the cold side for me. Candlemas or Ground Hog's Day is less than two weeks away. I usually look forward to that date because the days start getting noticeable longer and the weather starts seams a bit less brutal if not warmer. It gets old to be getting up and going to sleep in the dark amd th elonger days will be nice. Lent also helps count off the time for spring and it is nice to compare the later and later sunsets with the Wednesday night services.

I guess I should not be surprised I dream of spring when the weather is the coldest. Here's hpoing for warmer days.

Curb side trash pick up

Since we moved into Garrett, the trash at our place was picked up from the ally. Today, things are different, the city's new contract with the garbage pick up has moved the pick up to the street. This has been a common practice in Garrett since we moved here but not universal in Garrett. It is a common practice in a lot of areas. I just don't like it. I enjoyed not seeing the cans out at the street. It was nice having them out of sight and out of mind in the alleys. I can also see an issue when the streets are not plowed fully. That is kind of a mute point since if the roads are not plowed neither are the alleys but sometimes they do not plow the road fully and I can see that being a point of contention. I already plow out in front of my mail box which is at the curb after the plow truck has done only half to 3/4 of the road and the rest can go hang for a day or two or three.

Grump! They changed things and I don't like it. I am sure that after being indignant for a while, I will get used to it and just do it like it has always been that way. Maybe not, I still don't like having to change the clocks twice a year after having almost a decade break from daylight savings. Shoot me, I am of stubborn German Lutheran stock and don't like change. Until I get something else to complain about. Bye!

Travel Bug Travels

On October 30, Smokey was placed in Off Base, a new puzzle cache of mine. At the beginning of December, we had heavy rains and some flooding. My cache should have been well above the flood line, but possibly the high winds blew it out of its hiding place and into the river. The cache, with Smokey inside, floated seventeen or eighteen miles down the river to an island--the last stop before the open waters of Puget Sound--where it was picked up by a kayaker. He is not a geocacher, but he has a friend who is, so he brought the box to his friend. Contrary to GS's recommendation, I had not written the coordinates on the box, but the cacher identified the cache by looking up Smokey's tracking number.

The cacher emailed me before Christmas, and I finally retrieved the cache this afternoon (January 9) with the entire contents dry and intact--thanks to the kayaker, the cacher, the Lock & Lock box and Smokey. I don't know if I can replace the cache yet, but I'm going to put Smokey in a more accessible cache so it can move along.
